Belmond Hotel Splendido, Portofino

This 15th Anniversary issue dedicated to Italy would have been incomplete without the Belmond Splendido in Portofino. Unquestionably one of the best hotels in Europe and on the world luxury circuit. Many of the rich and famous who have been visiting Portofino on the Ligurian coast for decades would describe the idyllic village as paradise on earth. And still today, its magic and Mediterranean flair draw celebrities from the worlds of film, art, music and fashion. How fortunate we are that it was saved from destruction in 1945 by a Scottish woman who persuaded the officer in charge of the locality to disobey his orders to blow up the village and block its harbour.
The Belmond Splendido is the place to be in Portofino. Overlooking the delightful bay from its location high on a hillside, this former monastery offers not only magnificent views and a wonderful saltwater pool but also peace and serenity – with a dash of fun. I first visited the Splendido over fifteen years ago so it really has become a home away from home for me and it was always a genuine pleasure to be welcomed upon arrival by Ermes de Megni, one of the world’s truly great hotel managers. He was the Splendido’s General Manager for many years and now happily has been appointed as the Splendido’s Ambassador: ‘His Excellency’ is a title which suits him perfectly. In 2019 LVMH acquired the Belmond Hotel group as part of its long-term vision of becoming the world’s most desirable luxury travel brand. Part of this includes strategic expansion, drawing iconic properties into its remarkable portfolio. It has recently acquired the Villa Beatrice, formerly the Castello Odero, a 20th century building designed by architect Gino Coppedè, just steps away from the Splendido. In the meantime, the Splendido Mare, the Splendido’s guesthouse on the Piazetta in Portofino has been the first property to undergo full-scale remodelling since Belmond Hotels was acquired by LVMH. Belmond has partnered with Dior to create an exclusive new wellness experience in the gardens of the Splendido and as a guest at either of the properties you can enjoy the historic Bagni Fiore Beach Club, on the famous bay of Paraggi-Portofino since 1927.
It was a true delight. Can’t wait to be back!
