Belmond Hotel Caruso, Ravello

High on a cliff, with spectacular views over the Amalfi Coast and the Tyrrhenian Sea,the Belmond Hotel Caruso, a former medieval palace in the beautiful village of Ravello is unquestionably one of the best luxury destinations Italy has to offer. At the highest point, its infinity pool provides breath-taking views of the coastline below. But this intimate, understated gem is a haven from the world even during the summer, when the Amalfi Coast is really crowded with tourists from all over the globe. The rooms make the best of the view, with balconies overlooking the azure sea and tiered lemon and olive groves. Their interiors are immaculately decorated and every room and suite is unique, with carefully selected antique furniture and four-poster beds. I stayed in a beautiful suite with an original fresco above the desk (the hotel’s frescos were rediscovered during a long restoration project back in 2000). As you enjoy a candlelit dinner served impeccably in the Belvedere restaurant you will understand why, with its rich history as a retreat for writers, film stars and presidents, the Caruso is one of the most romantic hotels in the world.
