Château de Brindos, Biarritz

Having divided my time between Amsterdam and Biarritz for two decades, it was wonderful to hear that a new five-star property was opening towards the end of 2021. And now, finally, after two years, I had the opportunity to visit this new gem last November. This enchanting castle with its Hispano-Moorish inspired architecture reopened after an extensive renovation and is the latest Maison Millésime and Member of Relais & Châteaux. Brindos, Lac & Château is located in the heart of the Basque coast, along the shores of one of the largest private lakes in France, just a ten-minute drive from Biarritz and Anglet’s “surf’s up” beaches on the Atlantic coast. It has 39 rooms including nine suites and ten floating lodges on the lake which are only accessible by small electric boats. Brindos was built in 1438 and remodelled in the 1930s by Sir Reginald Wright, an eccentric Englishman who made it a place of endless celebration and dancing. The beau monde lounged on the terraces and at sunset contemplated the Château from their boats. Serge Blanco, a former rugby player, has been the owner since 2000. He wanted to preserve the heritage of this mythical place while bringing modernity, elegance and comfort. He has certainly achieved this and, needless to say, this wonderful establishment offers excellent service, exceptional culinary delights and a beautiful pool, spa and well-being area. Having such a fabulous location in the countryside but just a few minutes away from the Atlantic beachlife is almost unbelievable. A stay at this extraordinary place is definitely a unique experience in the Basque country.
