During my stay in Zürich last December, I visited the wonderful “Ernst Scheidegger. Photographer” exhibition in the Kunsthaus Zürich marking the centenary of the birth of one of the leading Swiss photographers of the 20th century. It revealed surprising and less-known work by this former Magnum photographer and companion of artists, including reportage photos and portraits of prominent figures from the art world. As well as being a leading photographer, Scheidegger, who died in 2016, was also an artist, publisher and gallery owner. In 1992, the Kunsthaus Zürich devoted a major presentation to all these aspects of his work; this time the focus was on Scheidegger the photographer. The show featured several early, generally unpublished, images and a selection of important photographs in which Scheidegger captured artists of his time, including Joan Miró, Hans Arp, Max Bill, Germaine Richier and Alberto Giacometti. Although the exhibition has just finished, I wanted to draw your attention to this exceptional artist and to the beautiful hardback book entitled “Ernst Scheidegger. Photographer” by Scheidegger & Spiess which accompanied the exhibition.
