Gerhard Richter, born in 1932, is one of the most important and celebrated artists of our time. His works can be found in international collections and have been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries around the world. In 1989 Gerhard Richter wanted to go on holiday and sought advice from Dieter Schwarz, who suggested the Waldhaus Hotel in Sils Maria in Switzerland’s Engadin valley. He loved it, returning again and again, and has produced a huge body of work inspired by the high Alpine landscape. Dieter Schwarz, who has carried out a major survey of these landscape works, explains “He has also overpainted photographs, creating works in which photographic depiction and painterly abstraction meet”. Dieter Schwarz has now curated an exhibition featuring more than 70 paintings and photographs that will go on show this winter at three locations in the valley: the Hauser & Wirth Gallery St. Moritz, the Segantini Museum and the Nietzsche Haus in Sils Maria. This is the first major exhibition of Richter’s landscapes since Hans Ulrich Obrist’s seminal show in 1992. I discovered the Engadin valley, with its pristine nature, more than 15 years ago and have since been a guest at the Waldhaus. It is no surprise to me that Gerhard Richter loves the Waldhaus and this region with its rugged beauty so much. Exhibition Gerhard Richter ‘Engadin’ 16 December 2023 - 13 April 2024.
