Kronenhalle Bar, Zurich

Text and Photography by Mart Engelen

During my stay in Zürich my dear friends, Ursula and Wolfgang, invited me for dinner at the legendary Kronenhalle in the Rämistrasse in Zürich’s city centre. This famous restaurant and bar opened in 1924 and thanks to the skilled management of Hulda Zumsteg it rapidly became a place where the local establishment met. It also attracted writers and artists: Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, James Joyce, Richard Strauss and Friedrich Dürrenmatt could be counted among its clientele. Nearly one hundred years of history have contributed to making the Kronenhalle a living synthesis of the arts. Guests from all over the world have been inspired by its unique atmosphere, cuisine and dazzling artworks. Sadly the bar is closed at the moment because of the health and safety measures but after dinner Wolfgang managed to arrange for us to have a digestive in there totally alone. This unique space is normally very lively but for once it was an oasis of tranquillity and we had a unique opportunity to enjoy the artworks and fabulous atmosphere in splendid isolation.
