La Longue Route D’Italie
Photography by Mart Engelen
Inspired by the trip that Pier Paolo Pasolini made in 1959, partly with photographer Paolo di Paolo, in his Fiat Millecento all along the entire Italian coastline, it was time two months ago to get behind the wheel of my recently restored 1971 Alfa Romeo GT junior and follow some of his tracks but also to visit my favourite destinations and friends in Italy. Visiting Italy is always an amazing adventure because you will need at least a lifetime to discover all its treasures, beauty, history and fascinating people. Travelling at a leisurely pace gave me the opportunity to see much more than normal of this wonderful country. My diary of this journey also shows some precious moments eternalised during my earlier visits to Italy. In a five-week journey, I could only cover a small part of the Italian peninsula but, then again, that’s a wonderful reason to go back next year.
Panerai’s links with the sea go back to the beginning of the last century when the Italian Navy commissioned the Florentine company to supply watches and precision instruments for its specialised underwater teams. These historical ties persist to this day, now strengthened by the sponsorship of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge. Started in 2005, the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge now encompasses ten of the world’s most prestigious classic yacht regattas in two circuits – the Mediterranean and the North American – and two independent regattas: the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta and the Panerai British Classic Week.
