Olissippo Lapa Palace, Lisbon

The Olissippo Lapa Palace is the jewel of Lisbon’s Lapa district. The hotel was the private residence of the Count of Valencas and stands on a hilltop in one of Lisbon’s most exclusive neighbourhoods, just moments away from the city’s most famous sites and shopping streets. The 109 gracefully-appointed rooms of this member of Leading Hotels of the World are located in the hotel’s colonial core and two modern wings. All feature furniture in the King Joao V and Queen Maria I styles, recreated by skilled craftsmen in the north of Portugal. The Royal Suite on the fifth floor has original furnishings and gold-leaf mirrors from 1870. Views of the Tagus complement the Mediterranean cuisine at the Lapa Restaurant, but other rooms, including The Tower Room, which is a lavishly luxurious suite with two private balconies, have arguably the best views in Lisbon. Staying here for the first time was a wonderful discovery.
