The Venice International Film Festival (Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica della Biennale di Venezia) was founded by Count Giuseppe Volpi in 1932 and is the oldest event of its kind in the world. The festival takes place on the Lido in August or September each year with screenings in the historic Palazzo del Cinema on the Lungomare Marconi and in other nearby venues. It is one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals and part of the Venice Biennale. The Film Festival’s principal awards are the Golden Lion (Leone d’Oro), which is awarded to the best film screened at the festival, the Silver Lion (Leone d’Argento) for the best director and the Volpi Cup (Coppa Volpi), which go to the best actor and the best actress. The Venice Biennale (La Biennale di Venezia) itself is an international cultural exhibition organised annually by the Biennale Foundation since 1895. The main exhibition, which alternates between art and architecture, takes place in Castello and locations in the Arsenale and Biennale Gardens. Millions of people come to experience the artistic treasures presented in the many architectural wonders. Fortunately, with a little care and planning, it is still possible to enjoy all these magnificent venues and avoid the crowds taking innumerable selfies in the City of Bridges.
